Cherries

June is the beginning of cherry season. These sweet and sometimes tart berries come out in all their glory as summer starts. Here our some reasons to love these little red fruits:

1 They are packed with goodness like vitamin A and C and potassium, which makes them good for your immune system, skin, vision and muscles.

2 Cherries grow on trees in clusters. One tree can have hundreds of cherries.

3 There are over a thousand different varieties of cherry tree, they have names such as, Morello, black stone cherry, Penny and Stella.

4 Always watch out for the stone in the middle, you don't want to eat these!

5 You can plant cherries from November to March.

6 Some cherries are sweet and can be eaten straight from the tree, but some cherries are too acidic and need to be cooked first.

7 Eat 14 of them to make up one of your portions of fruit and vegetables for the day.

Quick recipe: Remove stones from 100g of cherries and place in a small saucepan, add half a cup of orange juice and 1 tbsp of sugar and boil for 10 minutes. Remove the cherries and continue to boil until the syrup is thickened and coats the back of a spoon. Put the cherries back in the syrup and eat with porridge or yoghurt.
