Oat crunch cereal

Updated: Jun 18, 2020

This cereal is a bit like a grown up granola mixed with a honey nut cereal. You can put any nuts or dry fruit in it that you like. The key is to keep the ratio of grains to syrup the same. Always ask a grown up to help you in the kitchen.

What you need

Weighing scale (If you don't have a weighing scale use handfuls.)

Mixing bowl

Chopping board

Knife

Spoon

2 baking trays

Oven

Ingredients

150g (4 handfuls) oats

50g (2 big handfuls) sugar free puffed rice (found in the free from aisle)

1 handful mixed seeds

2 handfuls of nuts (almonds, pecans or hazelnuts)

30g (1/2 a handful) desiccated coconut

6 tbsp runny honey or maple syrup

2 handfuls dried fruit (apricots, raisins or dried cherries)

Method

For grown ups: You can prepare this for very little kids by chopping the nuts and fruit beforehand.

Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/gas 5

Kids: Put the oats, puffed rice and sunflower seeds into a large mixing bowl.

On a chopping board carefully chop the nuts into small pieces and add to the bowl. Add the coconut and give everything a really good stir with a spoon.

Add the honey or maple syrup to the oat mix and stir together until the oats are completely covered. You can scrunch it all up a bit with your hands as well.

Spoon half the mixture onto one baking tray and spread evenly with a spoon. Do the same with the remaining mixture onto the second baking tray.

Grown ups: Put into the oven to bake for 10 minutes.

Kids: Using a child safe knife, chop any large fruits, like apricots.

Grown ups: After 10 minutes, remove the trays from the oven.

Kids: Carefully mix up the oat mixture again and then sprinkle with the dried fruit. Don't touch the mixture or tray with your hands it will be hot!

Grownups: Return to the oven for another 5 minutes.

Remove from the oven and leave to cool completely before you put the cereal in an airtight container.

Warning! Children should be supervised when cooking at all times. Children should use child safe knives and never use the oven or hob unsupervised.
