Who's it for? 8+
What you need A few fresh and storecupboard items, a piece of paper, pencils or pens + imagination
What you do Design your own dish just like recipe developers and chefs do! Get creative in the kitchen with a little help from a grown up. Come up with your idea, research online if you need to, draw a picture, write down the steps to make your recipe then make your meal!
Grownups - Create a mystery bag of ingredients or let them look for ingredients themselves and challenge kids to design a dish. You can get them to write their idea on a piece of paper, perhaps even draw a picture. Help them to look up recipes (books or online) to guide them. Then help them to make their new creation by getting them to think about each step and write it down. When you're ready to cook, help them with any technical difficulties but let them be the head chef. They may even like calling you their sous chef and getting you to do some tasks for them. They may need help with sharp knives or use a child safe knife if you have one.
Some ideas for mystery bags:
pasta, tomatoes, basil, garlic, parmesan
flour, eggs, sugar, oil, blueberries
bread, tomato puree, olives, cheese
NB Always supervise children when using knives, hot liquids and the stove or oven.
