What is food?
Food is how people and animals get the energy their bodies need to stay alive and grow. The food we eat usually comes from animals or plants.
We split what we eat into food groups, we need to eat from different food groups to stay healthy. These food groups include
- Carbohydrates - grains like bread and pasta, and potatoes
- Protein - fish, meat, eggs and lentils
- Fruit and vegetables - tomatoes, carrots, peas, strawberries and broccoli (and many more)
- Dairy - milk, cheese, yoghurt and butter

Food is important for our bodies and how our food is grown and what is used to help it grow also has an impact on our planet. It's important that farming practices don't hurt the planet or other animal species.
What people eat may depend on where they live and what food is available to them. Most people buy their food in shops and markets, but lots of people around the world grow some or all of their food themselves. Check out our ideas for growing your own food.

When we have bought or grown our food, someone in our home usually cooks or prepares the food to combine ingredients into delicious meals. Check out our cooking ideas.
